Alrite, so i've been meaning to write this up for a while...
who do you think is very underappreciated musically? and i'm talking about people that are not well known, generally. As a dj, i get records pritty regularly, infact i collect them, and every once in a while there is the odd record that i genuinly think everyone should hear at some point in their lives. Here is my list. You may know some, or even all of these, but here it is anyway...
Nick drake. I could write pages on this guy lol
early mark bollan/t.rex stuff. Just very unique, very hippy folky stuff, before they went all glam rock.
commus. Possibly the strangest music i've yet heard. Very odd folk stuff.
The smiths. Just because lyrically their so obnoxious lol and whatever else you can say about morricy, he has a good ear for mellody.
Joy devision. One of the few punk/new wave groups i actually liked lol
love. More hippy stuff, think the beatles with less annoying voices and more psychedelic lyrics.
Pink floyd. Because they are amazing lol
sally oldfield. Mainly because of her singing and songwriting talents, and because she was hugely overshaddowed by her brother, mike.
The fall. I love them, not really sure why though
aphex twin. Just electronic artistry.
Bjork. That voice! it's amazing lol and the electronica side of her stuff is very, very interesting.
Not really sure what else to write here... lol
Dead by april: Starting to get out their, but not really. Kind of mix electronic metal, and it works really well.
Mental Issues: Just getting started, they've got a few tracks up on their site mental1ssues.com pretty nice as well.
Celldweller: Most notably known for his song "Switchback" but also has some other very good ones.
Awsome, I'll check both those artists out.
Thought of another one.
The Veer Union: As far as I know, not really mainstream, they just put out their first album in 2009, really good.
My list would be:
Frank Zappa
At the Drive-in
The Mars Volta (of course, since they were formed from At the Drive-in)
After Forever (a metal band, I think they may have broken up but they're amazing)
I'm sure there are others, but those are the best ones I can think of off the top of my head.
The confession: They broke up after one album in 2007, but still so awesome! I think I listen to them more then any of my other artists.
Another one is MeWithoutYou. Their last album didn't impress me, but other than that they're definitely worth checking out and I only know a couple people who have heard of them.
frank zapper is amazing, man. Especially the apostrophie lp.
I'm going to research all the above artists, thanks people.
The confessions EP wasn't so great, but their album Requiem blewme away.
I just thought of another one.
Cara Dillon: She's an Irish folk singer, but she's got an amazing voice. You might have some trouble finding her though, her albums especialy are hard to track down.
Cara Dillon! Someone said Cara Dillon! She is amazing! And Nick Drake and Sally Oldfield too, yay!
Here's my list:
Within Temptation. I don't understand how people can say that she can't sing. Just because she's a soprano who sings properly (for the most part) doesn't mean that she sings badly. And they do have pretty music! They're sort of Gothic, but pretty. Thankfully the WT guy who thinks he can scream has only done it on a few songs.
Amy MacDonald. I don't think she's country, but people say she is. If she is she's a rare good one. My favorite song by her is "Run". She only has one album out right now, This Is the Life.
Antony and the Johnsons. They're a bit of a strange sound, they're certainly an acquired taste. But "Hope There's Someone" is an unbelievable, beautiful song.
Aine Minogue. She's well-recognized among those who know her, but the recognition isn't widespread. She writes lovely Celtic music, and has a voice like falling water, and Song of the Banshee from Celtic Lamentations is one of the most beautiful, wordlessly eloquent songs I have ever heard in my life.
I'll think of more later.
awww, featheryyyyy, should have guessed lol
How did i manage to miss anthony and the johnsons out?
here are a few more i found when looking through records earlier.
itchy robot, kind of dub-ish electronica
tim buckley, jeff buckley's dad, amazing voice he could do anything with.
captain beetheart if i didn't mention him already lol
the incredible string band
the idle race, jeff lynn's former group, the guy that started the electric light orchestra
John dowland, 16th century composer, lute player and poet who people said was on a pa with shakespear at the time.
i'll add more lol
here are some more lol
elliot smith
minor majority
Emiliana Torrini
elbo
imogen heap
froofroo
the shins
keane
there are more probbably lol
Evans blue: Their first singer takes somet time to get used to since he continualy uses vibrato? Not sure if its a habit, or just something that happens with your voice, but he's alright. I like their new singer a bit more though.
Elliott Smith is amazing! Speaking of acoustic artists like that, City and Color is awesome too.
I've heard wonderful things about city and colour, but not actually heard anything they've done. A litle older, but mary hopkin, david grey and damien rice are all worth checking out in that vane.
Not sure if I'm spelling them right but
Penjalum: their an australian electronic band and their really good.
pendulum are amazing, i've supported them since 2003. their last album, insilico was a litle dissapointing for me, hold your colour was miles better. if you like them, you must check out
modified motion
drumsound and bassline smith
dj ruffstuff
logan d
dj fresh
youtube some of those lol
that is the main type of music i dj, drum and bass.
How could I forget these guys.
Dive: a band from New Jersey, and one that I really hope makes it big.
Deepfield: Another one that screaming_turtle showed me, and they are pretty good as well.
Another new rock band I like that's just getting started is Signum A.d. For an older group look up April Wine, think a combination of ACDC and Rainbow. Oh, and another great acoustic band, Iron and Wine.
you don't mean dive the electronica group that did concreet jungle do you? forgot about them lol
No, not them. Their a rock band from New Jersey.
For a comllete change of sound
Go look up Dan Gibson. lovely Celtic/new age with birdies and oceans and things as background.
You know I had to do that, lol
Nothing wrong with that. Glad to see its not just me and des and outrage posting here.
Oh, if only....There was a sort of "modern" "classical" artist called Giovanni who had this absolutely breathtaking piano playing style, but they don't make his music anymore. I'll gladly sendspace, ahem direct you to a legal site, where you can get a CD of it (only one sadly) if it's up anyone's alley. lol, I wonder if we could post soundtracks we wish were more well-recognized. For instance, I just can't understand why The Day After Tomorrow wasn't known for its absolutely breathtaking music...anyway, I'm going off topic. lol
that's not off topic, feathery
on that subject, the brother where art thou soundtrack is amazing, as is the e.t one.
currently listening to jefferson airplane.
The silent hill soundtracks are great, the game ones anyway. I haven't taken a look at the movie one yet. The devil may cry3 soundtrack is good as well.
Mmmmm. The E.T. soundtrack is fantastic. And I'm going to do here what I have in a few other places and paste my favorite soundtracks, in no particular order:
Armageddon
Day After Tomorrow
E.T.
Free Willy
Lord of the Rings
Dante's Peak
Halo
Harry Potter
Gladiator
Oh there's more, j*st let me think of them.
My turn.
In no particular order...
Daredevil
Elektra
The Punisher
Devl may Cry3
Tales of the abyss
Silent Hill: Origins
Wait, game soundtracks count too right? :D
Here's some groups that I think should be more recignized. they all have myspace
killdevil theory
burning sunday
by blood and fire
signal 99
check those ones out!
i think the following artists should be well known, glad to see cara dillon was mentioned i have all her albums she's amazing!
Butterfly boucher, the weepies, hayley westenra, fionn regan, he's irish and very cool, well, his first album is anyway, dan taminski, kate walsh, really check her out, beautiful stuff, mindie smith she's fantastic, cant think of anymore and if anyone knows any nice acoustic female or otherwise artists, please do post them i'm always on the look out
nice acoustic artists:
sally oldfield
bridgit st-john
vashty bunion
trader horne
nick drake, obviously
don mclean yes i know he did american pie, but listen to his albums!
early jephro tull
oh and joni mitchell and nick drake, obviously
Ok. I have to ask what you mean by artists that should be better known? I'd say that the likes of pink floid, zappa, and the smiths are known by most people that delve a little deeper into music than the mainstream radio playlists. Having said that, here is my list.
Frank Turner.
He is a folk artist who has roots in punk, and his lyrics often reflect this. Very good song writer and its stuff that everyone can relate to.
Scroobius Pip.
A spoken word artist again from England, its not rap, but draws on influences of that genre. Very clever poet. Others in that genre include polar bear, sage francis.
Dub FX.
This guy is an Australian, who travels the world with his partner, and nothing but a microphone, and a roland looping station. he creates songs on the spot by recording each part onto the station and looping it, all done with just his voice. Really incredible sound.
Nathan flute box Lee.
He is a beat boxer who incorporates flute. Great stuff.
John Martin.
Now dead, but incredible guitarist, especially his early stuff, look for london conversation.
Something corporate.
Andrew mcmahons first band, he is now in jacks manequin. Both bands are well worth checking out, especially if you like piano punk or rock.
Plan B.
British artist who has been called the english Eminem, due to his rather controvercial lyrics. his next album, due out in the next month moves away from that, and is said to show off more of his vocal talent. Well worth checking out.
So many more I can write about, but i'll leave it for now.
this list will span a few different genres, but here we go:
diablo swing orchestra. avont-guard metal band from sweden. very interesting sound, and very well worth a listen.
i'm going to reitterate fyon regan and iron and wine. all of the latter's albums are fantastic, and fyon regan's first album, blackwater child is beautiful. not so fussed on his latest release however.
jose gonzalez, fantastic acoustic artist.
bon iver, sort of acoustic folk, but very nice to listen to.
and googol bordello, possibly one of the stranges sounding bands i've ever heard.
Wait, wait, wait, hold on...
No one has mentioned Venetian Snares yet.
Whyyyyy? They're indescribable, it's mental electronica, and oh wait, wait, hold up
I have to do it
Rob knows I have to do it
(drum roll please)
Feather Boa. lmao
Now that's an interesting name.
I'll throw in a few. For acoustic artists, check out Laura Veirs, album called July Flame, it's not perfect but it's got some very nice tracks on it. Low is very cool, some might say boring, but that's kind of the point of them, so slow and hypnotic, "Songs for a Dead Pilot" and "When the Curtain Hits the Cast" are two of their albums, I also like their early stuff.
Zuckerbaby, they are a band from Calgary, Canada, nly locally known. Their first album is pop perfection, they had at least another one that was not as good (first album is self titled). Danish band called Carpark North, their second album "All things to all people" is great. Currently listening to "Codeine Velvet Club" which is the front man from "the Fratellos" with a Scottish singer called Loui, doing some sort of Sinatra ish music, it's really cool, the Fratellos (or Fratellies, or something) are another great pop band, at least their first album. I am going through my simple pop period so I must mention Ash, their new series, called the a-Z series has some fantastic songs. They release a song every two weeks and at the end of 26 songs they will release the album, "Return of the White Rabbit" is a free single and it's kinda cool "SpaceShot" is too. I think Ash are a perfect pop punk band, much much better song writing than, say, Blink 182, Lit, Jimmy Eat World and all of those. For one thing Ash has some great musicians, Charlotte Heatherly was a mean guitarist but she left the band. Tim Wheeler plays great and their rhythm section is rock solid. Blink 182 definitely has one of the world's best drummer but the rest of the guys know a couple of power chords. Not that it matters, and I like about 4 or 5 of their songs very much, but they get repetative and get on my nerves after more than 5 minutes of listening, but that's just me, not saying others shouldn't like them more.
Major Lazer is entertaining electronica, actually really cool. DJ Shadow is really well known, but if people haven't checked him out they should. Aphex Twin has already been mentioned, Roots Manuva too, some of is stuff is really cool. "These New Puretans" is excellent and I am currently infatuated with a band called "The Pains of Being Pure at Heart".
The latest Massive attack album is a Massive disappointment I must say, sadly, I was really hoping for that one to be great, but "Blue Lines" and "mezzanine" are two of their albums that should be in every record collection.
There was a totally obscure thrash and funk metal group called Mordred I really liked as a teenager. I dug up their albums and still like them. There is an EP called "Vision" that is their best work, but "Falling Away" is their best song, the album is called "In This Life". Their bassist is one of the best in the business, or was.
Oh, and the first Sneaker Pimps album is really good too, with "6 Feet Underground" and "Tesco Suicide" on it, although it is totally booty call music, to be played in a bed room while .. doing other things.
I am also always entertained with DJ Assault, classics like "Asses Whiggling" and "Ass and Tities", not to be played around your parents, and not to be listened to much, but it can be very funny while downing a few beers, on a guys night out.
I do like Lit. Too bad all anyone knows by them is my own worst enemy.
I liked a lot from their first album, but I have two later albums and not a single track from catches me, except a cover version they do on their third, I think of a Cure song, I hve to dig it up to see exactly what it is.
feathery, you have heard the venetian snares? lol they are out of this fucking world i tell yee
Has anyone mentioned OceanLab? Too lazy to look. Anyway, Sirens of the Sea, look it up, it's amazing trance music.
